The primary function of the Warrant Apprehension Unit (WAU) is to locate and apprehend fugitives wanted on outstanding felony warrants issued within Middlesex County. The unit also regularly receives requests for assistance from local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. These requests are considered a priority. In 2025, WAU members made or assisted in 478 arrests for individuals wanted on almost 1,400 felony charges and over 850 misdemeanor charges.
Additionally, the unit coordinates and performs criminal renditions and extraditions, working closely with the Middlesex District Attorney's Office. In 2025, the unit successfully returned 24 wanted fugitives to Massachusetts to face charges.
